Sports hall refurbishment cuts energy consumption by more than half

The match against CO2 emissions and energy consumption has been clearly won at the John-Brinckman primary school in Schwerin, Germany. Following upgrading of the gymnasium to modern LED light from TRILUX, these values have been "wrestled down" to less than half.

Last year the primary school's sports hall was comprehensively refurbished, and construction measures also consisted of installing a new lighting system. The persons responsible took the decision, with Actison RSX3 LED luminaires and a light management system, for mature solutions from the market leader TRILUX, and for good reason.

The energy-saving tandem cuts the emission of environmentally damaging greenhouse gases consisting of 133 tons of carbon dioxide over the complete lifespan of the system, and achieves annual electricity savings well in excess of 11,000 kWh. As a consequence, the environment and the municipal budget both benefit.

Installing efficient lighting technology meant that the refurbishment project was subsidised with 40% of the investment sum by the German Ministry of the Environment (BMUB). "The John-Brinckman School example clearly demonstrates how convincing upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting can be," emphasised TRILUX Managing Director Thomas

Kretzer. Power output was also significantly improved by upgrading from conventional fluorescent light sources to LED technology, and for this reason almost a quarter fewer luminaires had to be installed. TRILUX Actison RSX3 luminaires mean that not just energy saving is achieved in the sports hall, but the ball-proof surface-mounted luminaires also feature especially robust constructions and highly simple maintenance.

The light management system with daylight and presence control also means that the effective operating duration during everyday lighting operation has been cut by more than half – the electricity bill was also reduced by 54%.

Since its reopening, the children enjoy the modernised sports hall that provides optimum lighting comfort from morning to evening. The school management sees the complete project highly positively because the new sports hall significantly enhances the primary school, and energy consumption was tangibly reduced with the reconstruction.
