St. Jakobshalle Basel

Basel

When the St. Jakobshalle, designed by Giovanni Panozzo in the style of brutalism, was inaugurated in 1976, it was appreciated as an exemplary and exceedingly modern construction. The Berrel Berrel Kräutler (architecture) and Degelo Architekten (overall management) team approaches the existing building with a high level of respect with refurbishment and modernisation of the construction.

In the redesigned and expanded foyer, the special luminaires developed specifically for this project serve the architecture. A regular grid of 1,127 ring-shaped ceiling luminaires provide visitors to sports competitions, concerts and major events with a radiant reception. Atmospheric light scenes can also be called up for any type of event in the foyer.

New insulation of the building shell, as well as a modern infrastructure for sports events and proper fire prevention and emergency evacuation plans were among the challenges. All the while the building needed to be fully operational.

The St. Jakobshalle in Basel can seat 12.000 people and hosts several concerts and indoor sports events. After finalising renovation this year the building was supposed to be renamed after Roger Federer, but the local council voted against the plan. The world famous tennis player grew up in Basel and won multiple championships at the venue.

Fun fact: the hall played a modest contribution to music history. According to his biography, Bob Dylan decided to start the legendary Never-Ending Tour after his live concert in the St. Jakobshalle on September 10th, 1987.

Dougnut-shaped luminaires decorate the ceilings of the entrance hall in a perfect geometrical pattern. The luminaire, a custom design for the project, has a cover with a semi-gloss surface that spreads a uniform diffuse light. Lighting is created by more than fifty LED prints and mounting the luminaire is possible without the use of tools.
