At inner-city hotspots – such as a roundabout with pedestrian crossings – high-quality, glare-free street lighting is essential. To increase the awareness of road users at these locations, the Hanseatic town of Buxtehude has now carried out a pilot project together with TRILUX. As a pedestrian approaches the zebra crossing, the lights installed there change their light colour from warm white to cool white. This additional visual cue heightens awareness and thus also the sense of safety among all road users. The project was carried out using Jovie LED mast luminaires featuring Tunable White technology and the LiveLink Outdoor lighting management system.
For a harmonious streetscape, the colour temperature of urban outdoor lighting is generally uniform. In Buxtehude, predominantly warm-white LED solutions are used. The warm white light is perceived as particularly pleasant and atmospheric. Moreover, it is less attractive to many insect species than cool-white LEDs. Cold white light, by contrast, provides better visual orientation and contrast perception. Thanks to integrated lighting management, these advantages can be realised with a single system. The Hanseatic city of Buxtehude is using this flexibility as part of a pilot project.
Moreover, it is an important step for Buxtehude on the road to becoming climate‑neutral by 2035, as the Hanseatic city regards the energy consumption of its infrastructure as a climate‑relevant factor. Retrofitting to efficient luminaires such as the Jovie LED plays a decisive role in reducing energy consumption and thus also offers an important avenue for other cities and municipalities to lower their energy costs and meet their climate targets.
The existing LED lights at the roundabout on Harburger Street were replaced with Jovie LED mast lights in the area of the zebra crossing. These were networked via the lighting management system LiveLink Outdoor and fitted with PIR sensors. The sensors have an asymmetrical detection area that covers the pedestrian waiting area. If a passer-by is 'in sight', the Jovie LED automatically changes its light colour from warm white (3,000 K) to cool white (5,000 K), while maintaining a constant luminous flux. That signals to drivers and pedestrians: Watch out, something's happening here! Smart technology is popular in Buxtehude. "We have already received a great deal of positive feedback from the public immediately after the conversion," reports Philipp Schiemann, Senior Marketing Manager Germany at TRILUX Germany. Moreover, the project is an excellent blueprint for other cities and municipalities that are interested in the potential of Tunable White technology.
