A Benefit for Investors and Operators

Lighting and Certification

Sustainable construction is becoming increasingly important due to legal requirements on energy efficiency, scarce resources and rising expectations around user well-being and building comfort. Building certifications such as DGNB, LEED, BREEAM, and WELL help investors and operators objectively evaluate and document a property’s sustainability level. But what are the differences between the schemes and what matters when it comes to lighting? We spoke to physicist Arno Eversmeyer from TRILUX’s Lighting Applications team for an overview.

What are the benefits of building certification for investors and operators?

Building certification significantly enhances a property’s appeal. It signals sustainability and high-quality standards, which positively influences property value. Additionally, most certifications require high energy efficiency standards. This leads to lower operating costs - a clear benefit for both investors and operators.

What are the most relevant building certifications for us, and how do they differ?

DGNB, LEED or BREEAM are systems that take overall sustainability into account - including energy efficiency, environmental impact, material selection and interior quality. The WELL certification system, on the other hand, focuses specifically on the user experience and well-being. It evaluates ten categories including indoor air quality, acoustics, lighting and materials.

What does this mean for lighting?

Lighting plays a key role in interior quality, energy and environmental performance. For certification under systems such as LEED, BREEAM and DGNB, a documented holistic lighting concept must be developed. We must demonstrate compliance with technical and lighting design quality criteria such as flicker-free operation, ambient lighting, glare control and color rendering. The WELL standard additionally requires specific values for “melanopically equivalent daylight illuminance” – a measure of light’s non-visual effects on humans. It is especially important in Human Centric Lighting (HCL) design.

What role do lighting management systems and HCL play?

Lighting management systems contribute to energy efficiency and personalized lighting options and are positively rated in all certification systems. They also provide the foundation for HCL concepts, which are not possible without lighting management. In the WELL system in particular, HCL plays a prominent role and scores highly in the evaluation.

How do we support our customers in the certification process?

We offer a wide portfolio of luminaires that are tailored to specific applications and optimised for certification. Our LiveLink control platform meets all relevant lighting management criteria, especially those related to HCL. For many products, we also provide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which deliver valuable data to support sustainable building certifications.
