On 11 March 2026, another product in our portfolio received ENEC certification: Yonos. Following the successful certification of E-Line Pro IP50, an independent European testing body has once again confirmed the compliance of a key system within our product range—including external type testing and regular production monitoring.
ENEC certification stands for verified safety in accordance with harmonized European standards. For planners, developers and operators, this means greater transparency, reliability and additional security in project applications.
But what exactly does the ENEC mark represent—and how does it differ from other markings such as the CE mark?
Products placed on the market in the European Union must bear the CE mark. To do so, they must meet defined requirements. These are defined in various EU directives and set out minimum requirements for electrical products. These include safety design, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), energy efficiency, and other product characteristics. If these requirements are demonstrably met, the manufacturer may declare conformity with the directives and affix the CE marking to the product— often described as a “passport” within the EU.
The CE marking is not a test mark, but a legally required marking for products covered by EU harmonization legislation.
By affixing the CE marking, the manufacturer declares on its own responsibility that the product meets the essential requirements of the relevant EU directives. A mandatory external inspection is generally not required.
Key elements of the CE marking:
CE marking enables market access but does not constitute independent safety certification.
The ENEC mark (European Norms Electrical Certification) is a voluntary, Europe-wide recognised certification mark for electrical products, particularly for luminaires and their components. It is issued by accredited European certification bodies that test and monitor products according to a standardized procedure.
The ENEC certificate confirms compliance with the relevant harmonized European standards and includes not only product testing but also regular factory inspections.
Key elements:
ENEC certification thus stands for an independent, standards-based third-party inspection with Europe-wide validity.
The GS mark (Tested Safety) is also a voluntary certification mark, but with a national legal basis in Germany under the Product Safety Act (ProdSG). It confirms that an accredited, independent testing institute has tested the product for safety.
Unlike the CE marking, the GS mark is also based on external testing and ongoing monitoring of production.
For luminaires, the GS mark can serve as an alternative to the ENEC mark. However, ENEC is specifically designed for electrical products and is uniformly established throughout Europe.
Since the CE mark only confirms a luminaire’s basic compliance with standards, it does not support comparison between products. This is where independent certification becomes relevant. They enable companies to objectively assess product quality using uniform testing criteria. Many customers and tenders, particularly in the public sector, require such an independent product evaluation and the corresponding proof. The ENEC certificate is such a quality mark. That is why we aim to certify all our standard luminaires with the European ENEC mark.
As a first step, the responsible designer or electrical engineering expert requests ENEC certification for a new product family from the internal CERT department.
Comprehensive documentation is submitted—ranging from a type list and component certificates to assembly instructions and product data.
CERT then commissions an accredited external testing laboratory. Test samples are defined jointly to ensure that all safety-relevant components are tested as part of the ENEC certification process.
No.
Luminaires are generally subject to the Low Voltage Directive, the EMC Directive, and other EU regulations. Before being placed on the market in the European Economic Area, an EU Declaration of Conformity is required, and the product must bear the CE marking. Without the CE marking, lawful distribution is not permitted.
CE is a manufacturer’s declaration. The manufacturer confirms on its own responsibility that the product meets the applicable EU requirements. Mandatory external testing by an independent institute is generally not required.
ENEC is based on an independent third-party inspection by an accredited European certification body. In addition to product testing, the certification includes regular factory inspections and ongoing monitoring of production.
This ensures that compliance with the standard is not only declared but also externally verified and confirmed.
The CE marking is legally required for luminaires. ENEC is voluntary and goes beyond the minimum legal requirements. It documents an additional independent test in accordance with harmonized European standards.
Office and industrial projects involve long-term capital goods with high requirements for safety, reliability, and documentation.
An independent third-party test provides additional planning certainty here—especially with regard to:
Third-party certification for lighting is often required in many public sector tenders. ENEC certification meets these requirements.
