At a time when energy costs are rising and sustainability is a top priority, Deventer Hospital has taken an impressive step forward. By replacing conventional lighting (TL and PL) with energy-efficient LED solutions, the hospital is significantly reducing energy costs while contributing to a better environment.
The Deventer Hospital building dates back to 2008 and was originally fully equipped with TRILUX lighting in collaboration with installer Croonwolter&Dros. Due to rising energy costs and the phase-out of conventional light sources such as TL and PL lamps, the hospital found it necessary to modernize its lighting more than 15 years later. Additionally, the availability of the Sustainable Social Real Estate (DUMAVA) subsidy provided a financial incentive to accelerate the replacement cycle. René Worm, Technical Project Manager at Deventer Hospital, explains: “The regular lighting replacement was scheduled for 2028, but we decided to bring it forward. With the subsidy, improved lighting comfort, and the phase-out of TL and PL light sources, switching to LED became increasingly attractive. Our previous energy consumption for lighting was around 3.2 million kWh. By switching to LED, we expect to save approximately 40%, which equals about 1.4 million kWh and a CO2 reduction of 400 tons per year.”
In collaboration with Croonwolter&Dros, TRILUX conducted a comprehensive assessment of the existing fixtures. Based on this, lighting calculations and planning were developed to align with the hospital's new requirements. In large parts of the hospital, a one-to-one replacement of the fixtures was chosen. In some areas, a new ceiling was also installed to optimize lighting quality and aesthetics.
To make the renovation of over 12,000 light points as efficient as possible, the hospital deliberately opted for a limited portfolio of fixtures. The lighting plan for Deventer Hospital included Arimo Fit recessed panels in hallways, Sonnos LED downlights in office spaces and larger general areas such as the restaurant and waiting rooms, and Aragon Fit waterproof fixtures in technical spaces. Each fixture was selected to meet the specific requirements of its application. By frequently using the same types of lighting, installation processes were streamlined, and maintenance complexity was reduced. Michel van Beek, Project Manager at Croonwolter&Dros, emphasizes: “In addition to replacing the fixtures, we chose to install a lighting management system. This allows us to illuminate the entire hospital with a small variety of fixtures. We can also precisely adjust the lighting comfort per department and room to the desired level, benefiting both patients and staff. An added advantage is that this system extends the lifespan of the LED fixtures—an important factor in the hospital's sustainability efforts.”
Another unique aspect of this project was the collaboration with KonnecteD, the employment and training organization of the Municipality of Deventer for people with a distance to the labor market. By joining forces, an efficient last-mile delivery hub was set up. For certain fixtures, KonnecteD carried out assembly work at their facility in Deventer. The assembled fixtures were then delivered to the hospital on a daily or weekly basis as needed. At the request of Deventer Hospital and Croonwolter&Dros, special project packaging was introduced. The required LED fixtures were delivered in larger project boxes with significantly less packaging material. This had two key benefits: reduced waste and shorter unpacking time for installers.
With this project, Deventer Hospital has invested not only in energy efficiency but also in social responsibility and local collaboration. Michel van Beek sums it up: “We chose TRILUX in consultation with the hospital because our collaboration with them has been excellent, and we are very satisfied with the support they provide in lighting calculations and logistical support.”
