A breath of fresh air in Kiel: The conversion of the former HSH-Nordbank into a branch of Kieler Volksbank has created an innovative and customer-friendly advisory and service landscape. The existing 700 m2 customer hall was restructured from the ground up by interior designer Imke Stüven (Stuevendesign), introducing smaller, separate cubes as offices and meeting zones. At the heart of the new lighting concept by our lighting designer Jan Laabs, is our Rail track system with a combination of Lenty spotlights and flush-mounted Linell linear inserts. Existing downlights were seamlessly replaced 1:1 with Sonnos downlights using matching refurbishment rings – no ceiling alterations required.

Conversion into the bank of tomorrow

Following the refurbishment by Böhmer Konzept GmbH as general contractor for the interior fit-out and the electrical contractor Gärtner Elektrotechnik GmbH, the premises on Martensdamm in Kiel are unrecognisable. In the new entrance area, customers are greeted by a modern service counter with a light-coloured wooden finish. A striking feature is the huge oval ceiling cut-out that once housed a luminous ceiling, now fitted with a combination of acoustic baffles and our Rail track system - extending seamlessly into the rear seating areas. Flush-mounted linear inserts provide ambient lighting, while Lenty spotlights create targeted accents. "A high-quality design and the flush finish of the Rail with the baffles and the metal ceiling were particularly important," recalls project manager Marco Barth at TRILUX, who oversaw the project. The result is a modern, visually appealing ceiling landscape that also delivers excellent functionality.

Retrofit without touching the ceiling

A key planning challenge was the need to keep the existing perforated metal ceiling intact, integrating existing cut-outs and installation points into the new concept – even though the room layout and walkways had changed significantly. Using Sonnos downlights with matching refurbishment rings, the existing cut-outs (Ø 68–340 mm) were accommodated without alterations, enabling a straightforward 1:1 replacement with no tools required. Where previous light points were no longer needed after the renovation, their output was dimmed so they blend harmoniously into the new lighting scheme.

Above desks, Sonnos downlights (4,000 K, UGR < 19) deliver high-quality workplace lighting, while Lenty spotlights in a warmer 3,000 K take care of zoning and accent lighting.

Smart control, big impact

We have controlled networked lighting via a DALI bus connected to a KNX system. Our custom user interface allows flexible setting of lighting scenes, dimming levels and specific modes – including dedicated light for cleaning staff. In offices near windows, Sonnos downlights are paired with motion and daylight sensors to maximise efficiency.

This approach has cut energy consumption by around 70 % compared to the previous installation, while significantly enhancing both lighting quality and atmosphere. The result is a win for employees and customers – and a model for other retail and commercial spaces.
