Dziekanka Hospital in Gniezno

Lighting That Delivers Safety, Comfort, and Spatial Harmony

The Aleksander Piotrowski Provincial Neuropsychiatric Hospital “Dziekanka” in Gniezno has an extensive park, walking paths, and access roads, which are frequently used by patients, staff, and visitors. A lighting upgrade was carried out to improve safety, comfort, and the overall quality of the space after dark. To meet these requirements, TRILUX delivered LED lighting solutions with high energy efficiency and a neutral, elegant design.

The modernisation resulted in a reduction in installed power from approximately 80 W to 32 W per lighting point, improved visibility, a greater sense of safety, and subtle highlighting of the park’s natural features, including its mature trees.

Safety and comfort for users

The main aim of the investment was to improve the comfort and safety of people moving around the hospital grounds during the evening and at night.

"The hospital grounds are an environment where people with a heightened sensitivity to external stimuli are present on a daily basis. For this reason, the lighting needed to be evenly distributed, glare-free and visually comfortable, with a focus on a calm and harmonious atmosphere rather than a theatrical lighting effect,” says Szymon Koźlarek, Head of the Technical Department at Dziekanka Hospital.

Equally important was the reduction of operating costs. Modern LED luminaires offer lower energy consumption and longer service life, which significantly reduces the need for maintenance.

Collaboration translating into quality and aesthetics

Due to the historical character of the park, which is under the supervision of the heritage conservation authority- the lighting solutions needed integrate to sensitively with the surroundings.

"The biggest challenge was choosing luminaires with optics that would deliver uniform illumination, without glare and without emitting light into the upper hemisphere. This project required sensitivity, not just technology," explains Grzegorz Cybulskifrom TRILUX.

Several luminaire options were presented and tested during an on-site inspection. The final specification included 110 Lumantix mushroom luminaires (TRILUX LTX PT-AB2L-LR/3800-730), selected for their neutral appearance, high efficiency and optics suited to recreational areas.

"The heritage conservation authority approved the proposed luminaires both for their aesthetic qualities and because the light is not directed upwards, helping preserve the park’s natural character at night," adds Grzegorz Cybulski.

Tangible benefits for finances, the environment and users

Following the modernisation, energy consumption was reduced by more than 50%. The sense of safety among patients and staff has also improved. The park has now become more accessible and welcoming to walk through in the evening, while its mature trees and the network of paths are subtly highlighted by the lighting.

"After dark, it is simply safer. Staff and visitors have repeatedly pointed out what a significant change this is. The light does not dominate the space - it supports it," emphasises Szymon Koźlarek.

"I am proud of this project. We managed to create lighting that is functional and subtle - lighting that respects both the users and the place," says Grzegorz Cybulski.

The lighting upgrade at the Dziekanka Hospital Park provides a perfect example of where technology, aesthetics, and care for people go hand-in-hand. The sensitive environment, the demanding nature of the space, and the requirements of heritage conservation called for a precise and considered approach. These were successfully implemented, resulting in a space that is both safer and more efficient to maintain.
