From clinical to calm light in exciting environments

Maastro opts for calm and experience in healthcare lighting

Providing patients with cancer with the best possible treatment. That is the goal of Maastro radiotherapy centre in the south of the Netherlands. Irradiation of cancer patients takes place in six treatment rooms, which are built as protected treatment chambers, to avoid the radiation from reaching the outside. These are solid constructions that are technically necessary, yet dressed up in a way that radiates calm and comfort. During the large-scale replacement of its machinery, the radiotherapy centre decided not only to innovate technically, but also to put the patient experience at the centre. With lighting from TRILUX, designed in collaboration with Architecten aan de Maas and installed by Equans, the treatment rooms were given a whole new look.

Warm and humane light

"Anyone who comes in here is definitely not lying on a treatment table for fun," says Liesbeth Cloin, Manager Facility Management at Maastro. "This is precisely why we wanted to get rid of the chilly, clinical feeling in a medical space. We looked at how to use light, colour and themes to bring calm to an exciting environment."

The treatment rooms with walls over two metres thick of concrete were each given their own atmosphere. From marl to cherries, from water to meadows. Above each irradiation unit is a beautiful skylight with a recognisable picture from the Limburg hill country, printed on Arimo LED panels from the TRILUX factory. "No standard stock photos," Cloin stresses, "but images of places our patients know. That way, we let them forget where they are and give them the feeling of home for a while."

Light that guides and softens

The lighting design contributes greatly to the experience. Rafael Calis Sanchez, architect at Architecten aan de Maas and a specialist in healthcare architecture, designed a subtle interplay of lines together with TRILUX that literally accompanies patients. "From the moment someone enters the front porch of the treatment room, he or she is visually taken by the light. A subtle, narrow asymmetrical Finea light line runs in the corridor that collects the radiation from the appliances (the labyrinth), providing direction and radiating calm. This line is placed off-centre to make and keep the experience for patients in bed as pleasant as possible and gives a nice even light pattern compared to lighting with the Sonnos Downlights in the ceiling. Visually, both patient and healthcare professional can follow the light towards the bunker."

In the treatment rooms themselves, the team also deliberately chose lighting that does not shine directly into the eyes of patients lying on their backs in bed. "A small detail," argues Cloin, "but it makes a world of difference. Nobody wants a flashing fixture above them while your bed is being wheeled in."

Design in harmony

The cooperation between architect, installer and lighting supplier was tight from the very first moment. Calis Sanchez: "Together, we sought a balance between functional and experiential lighting." Cloin complements him: "The TRILUX Finea line lights are actually intended for fixed ceilings, but thanks to smart adjustments, they fit perfectly into our system ceiling. I really appreciate that flexibility."

Calis Sanchez is also enthusiastic about the cooperation with TRILUX lighting consultant Marcel Jansen: "Marcel understands my way of designing. He always thinks along and ensures that the lighting design fits the architecture, without compromising on quality or atmosphere."

Every space should feel good

The renovated treatment rooms each have a recognisable theme reflected in light, colour and even art. The labyrinth features murals by a local graffiti artist, tailored to the theme. Cloin: "This is how we create warmth, recognition and distraction. We have patients taking a photo at the mural during their last treatment. Or even match their clothes to the colours of their treatment room. I think that's a great compliment."

The effect is not limited to the patient. Staff also benefit from the pleasant atmosphere and smart lighting control. "Our people work a lot on screens," Cloin explains. "That’s why the lighting is systematically dimmed. It calms the ceiling and prevents fatigue. Everything is also programmable, manually operable and sustainable, in line with the Green Deal commitments we adhere to as a healthcare institution."

Keep improving together

Being a care space, the intermediate step to the house installer is a very important one for Cloin. "We want to draw patients' attention to the skylight, not to all the technical solutions incorporated in the ceiling. This is sometimes quite a puzzle for which we deliberately take all the time we need. You can only do it right once."

After four renovated treatment rooms, she happily looks back with pride. And ahead. "We keep learning," says Cloin. "In every renovation, we incorporate our experiences. Working with one fixed, committed partner for lighting (TRILUX) allows us to continuously improve. As a team, we also know how to move through the process smoothly, so that we can order all the custom luminaires we need on time and not run into long delivery times."

For her, the cooperation tastes like more: the office and waiting rooms are also being fitted with TRILUX luminaires step by step. Calis Sanchez: "Here, too, we are trying to take a broader view and, from the renovation of the treatment rooms, to focus on the experience, so that, among other things, the waiting areas are decorated and lit as pleasantly as possible. After all, that place also has a big impact on everyone's treatment. From entering and first contact at reception, to treatment and leaving again for home. Throughout the visit, we do not want to create a hospital environment but a hotel atmosphere, to minimise patients' feeling that they are undergoing a very tough treatment. Light is a crucial ingredient in this."

Peace, recognition and quality

Maastro's revamped bunkers show what is possible when technology and experience go hand in hand. Thanks to the interplay between Maastro, Architecten aan de Maas, Equans and TRILUX, an environment has been created in which light does more than illuminate: it reassures.

"We want patients to feel safe and relaxed," Cloin concludes. "If light contributes to that, then we have done well."
