An essential prerequisite for a successful "as a service" agreement is the trusting co-operation between customer and supplier. The requirements and wishes of the custom-er must be clear so that an individual lighting solution can be developed. The fact that there is excellent cooperation with TRILUX for the renovation of four buildings in the city of Mechelen is evident from the words of Councillors Koen Anciaux and Marina de Bie from the city council.

Light as a Service

Reducing the energy consumption of buildings is high on the agenda of many companies, institutions and administra-tions. Public authorities often feel the need to lead by example. In this respect, the city of Mechelen is one of the most progressive cities in Belgium.

It all started with the Mechelen municipality's decision to carry out a thorough lighting refurbishment in a number of buildings. "We replaced all the outdated conventional lights in four buildings with modern LED lighting," says Marina de Bie. "We know that by doing this we use less energy and reduce our CO2 emissions and therefore our costs. In this specific case, we opted for 'Light as a Service'. This way we ensure that we can make all our buildings more sustainable in the shortest possible time without having to invest ourselves."

"We have installed new lights in the Academy of Fine Arts, the Conservatory, the Cultural Centre and the City Ar-chives of Mechelen," adds Koen Anciaux. "To realise this in the short term, we made a tender for 'Light as a Service', looking for a company to make the investment for us, with part of the monthly costs financed from the energy savings."

Anciaux continues: "We chose TRILUX because they presented the most comprehensive offer and the best financ-ing plan. TRILUX convincingly explained the concept behind it and what happens to the luminaires at the end of their useful life. "

The overall picture

With a service model such as "Light as a Service", full responsibility for the lighting installation remains with the supplier. "This means that if the lighting is broken, we contact TRILUX," says Anciaux. "They then ensure that the lighting is repaired within a contractually agreed period. This has the advantage that we always have optimal lighting and no longer have to use our own employees for maintenance. That's a big saving for us overall."

All buildings are now equipped with modern LED lighting and the city of Mechelen is very satisfied with this. Anciaux about the cooperation: "The whole project went completely smoothly thanks to the good cooperation with TRILUX. We would certainly choose TRILUX again and can highly recommend them to other companies or cities dealing with 'light as a service'."
