The potential of lighting management in outdoor areas extends beyond dimming profiles and sensor control. The choice of light colour helps shape public spaces for city marketing and supports sustainability with insect-friendly light. Tunable White luminaires form the basis for this. How does the technology work, where is it used and what advantages does it offer in practice? Fabio Granata, Product Manager for technical pole-mounted luminaires at TRILUX has the answers.
With Tunable White luminaires, the colour temperature can usually be varied continuously between 2200 Kelvin (warm white) and 4000 Kelvin (neutral white). This is achieved using modular 2-channel LED boards that combine LEDs with different colour temperatures. The easiest way to control the colour temperature is via our LiveLink Outdoor light management system – either manually via the user interface or automatically through pre-programmed light scenes. A key quality feature is that with high-quality Tunable White solutions, luminous flux and uniformity remain constant regardless of the selected colour temperature.
Tunable White can be used in a wide range of applications, from city centres and parks to promenades, railway stations and pedestrian zones. A warm evening light colour in city centres can enhance the quality of stay and encourage people to linger longer. Where the focus is on orientation and safety – such as at events or during peak traffic times – a neutral or cool white light colour is recommended. Insects are also less attracted to certain light colours, although this varies greatly by species. Matching the light colour to local insect populations can help reduce ecological impact. Parks and suburban green spaces benefit from this insect-friendly lighting.
Cities and municipalities need to make lighting more sustainable, efficient and attractive. Lighting management is therefore becoming increasingly important. A control system with dimming, presence and daylight sensors can reduce energy consumption by up to 80 per cent compared to a conventional, unregulated system. Once a city opts for a lighting management system, the step to Tunable White luminaires is relatively small – yet it offers cities a wide range of opportunities for both city marketing and sustainability.
Yes, sure. In Berlin, for example, the area around Potsdamer Platz has just been extensively redeveloped. Lighting plays a key role in improving the atmosphere and quality of stay. Networked luminaires with Tunable White LEDs are used in the project. The lighting is dimmed slightly in the evening, while the shops and outdoor catering areas are open. Later at night, the colour temperature is reduced from 3000 Kelvin to warm white 2200 Kelvin. Passers-by appreciate the "warmer" light, which is also less attractive to insects.
Since April 2025, almost all our outdoor lights have been available as Tunable White versions. On request, they can be supplied with one or two Zhaga interfaces, enabling easy and secure networking with the LiveLink Outdoor light management system as well as integration with sensors and IoT modules. Smart lighting control enables cities and municipalities to respond flexibly to different requirements – whether insect-friendly park lighting, more ambience in pedestrian zones, or bright, secure illumination in railway station areas.
