Significantly larger, more modern and more efficient: Instead of extensively renovating the ageing store, EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Nordbayern Sachsen Thüringen and owner Mr Höchner decided to build a completely new E-centre on the same site in Bad Königshofen. The aim: more sales space, a more attractive shopping experience for customers and significantly lower energy costs thanks to modern LED lighting. After all, we have been working together with EDEKA for a long time and, together with EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen, have defined a lighting concept including a fixed range of luminaires for EDEKA stores in this region. But after a visit to our showroom, we changed our plans again.
With Yuvio Track and Yuvio Twin, we have recently added two particularly attractive and flexible track spotlights to our portfolio - which have been honoured with the "iF Design Award 2025" and the "Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025", among others. As the luminaires were a perfect fit for the project, we presented them to the EDEKA NST project team in our showroom. And this after the initial planning steps had already been completed. The new Yuvio spotlights made an immediate impression and are now at the centre of the revised lighting concept. They provide the basic and accent lighting in the approx. 2,500 m² E-Center. In stylish black, they harmonise perfectly with the suspended light ceiling - and their high quality of light and colour rendering (CRI > 90) ensure optimum visual conditions and eye-catching product presentation throughout the market.
In order to optimally illuminate the various market areas and product ranges, the beam characteristics and light colours were individually adapted to the approximately 500 light points and the goods to be illuminated. The Yuvio Track in the particularly economical Efficient Cool light colour is used in the cosmetics department, while the Brilliant Food version is used in the wine department. The lighting of the graphics on the rear walls also plays a special role. Yuvio Track (Efficient White) with oval beam characteristics is used here. The rotatable Yuvio-Track spotlight with oval lens, which we have developed especially for retail applications, creates an oval light pattern with a particularly pleasant soft transition at the edges. This creates a visual expanse that makes the store appear larger and more open and improves the shopping experience. In the fresh food counter area with a slightly lower suspended ceiling, Quira recessed spotlights ensure attractively illuminated goods - for example with the special light colours Meat (meat and sausage products), Brilliant Food (cheese) and Efficient Cool (fish). The generous swivelling range of the recessed spotlight allows the goods to be perfectly displayed.
The fact that this E-Center is something special can be seen from afar: an expansive parapet roof covers the entrance area, protecting it from direct weather influences. To attract customers, the edges of the parapet and the strikingly angular entrance portal are effectively staged with LED strips. We realised this special lighting with Barthelme LED-Solutions as our supplier and partner. Another eye-catching feature is the checkout area, which also stands out from the rest of the store design in terms of lighting. For better orientation in the E-Center, it is marked by Lorino ring lights (1 m or 1.2 m in diameter) that are visible from afar. All the luminaires were networked via DALI and integrated into a lighting management system. This enables us to react quickly and flexibly to changes in the market in the long term. Together with EDEKA, the required illuminance levels were defined in the respective departments and stored as dimming values in the lighting management system. This enables us to guarantee the best possible product illumination at all times.
As a full-service provider, we also took over the lighting of the technical and ancillary areas as well as the façade and loading areas. Our E-Line is used in the warehouse, while in the functional rooms we provide the right light with a mix of Oleveon Fit and Nextrema G3 moisture-proof luminaires, among others, and the façade is illuminated with Combial spotlights. "We impressed with our overall range of innovative, high-quality lighting solutions and comprehensive services," says Erik Skripski, Key Account Retail at TRILUX, summarising the project, adding: "What was particularly important was the excellent teamwork, which enabled us to respond quickly and efficiently to any challenges that arose."
The effort was more than worth it. "The new store impresses with its modern ambience and attractively illuminated product range - and is therefore also a role model for other retailers," says owner Marius Höchner happily. So, if you're in the neighbourhood, you should definitely plan a detour to the new E-Center Höchner - and not only shop but also admire the lighting.
