Old hall, latest technology: cold store refurbishment in Garching

Garching, Germany

Location

13.000 m2

Space

The Raben Group is an international logistics company with over 12,000 employees and more than 170 locations in Europe. In order to expand its capacities in Germany, the logistics group acquired a 13,000m2 site in Garching near Munich, including a huge refrigerated warehouse. In order to improve the quality of light and reduce the high operating costs, the Raben Group decided in favour of a comprehensive lighting refurbishment. By replacing the outdated existing lighting with the E-Line Pro continuous-row system from TRILUX, operating costs are reduced by around 80 per cent. Special challenges: The installation of the continuous rooflight was made more difficult by a thick-walled polystyrene ceiling. The emergency lighting was also to be integrated into the new lighting system. Stefan Schmidmair from the Raben Group Germany summarises the project.

Refurbishment with the E-Line Pro continuous rooflight

We have been working with the Raben Group since 2016 and have already realised numerous logistics and office projects together, e.g. the Raben Group headquarters in Poland ("Tulip House" in Ruda Slaska). The centrepiece of the new logistics site in Garching is a 9,000m2 cold store, which was previously used to store pork. As the existing lighting was causing unnecessarily high energy costs and was not adapted to the new warehouse use, Raben decided to refurbish the affected sections of the hall. We worked closely with the customer to develop a lighting concept based on E-Line Pro and converted six of the nine hall sections to smart and energy-efficient lighting. In addition to efficiency, a particularly high quality of light was important, as the former cold stores have no windows. A flexible and adaptable system was also required to make the refurbishment future-proof. "Thanks to the freely positionable luminaire inserts, we can change the utilisation of the logistics and transshipment halls and adapt the lighting accordingly without any effort," explains Stefan Schmidmair, Branch Manager for the Garching site at Raben.

Challenges

Styrofoam ceiling and emergency lighting

The polystyrene ceiling of the cold store proved to be a particular challenge during installation, as it only has a low load-bearing capacity compared to conventional ceiling systems. We therefore developed special fastening solutions for the project, tested them in several laboratory tests and calculated the number and spacing of the required fastening points. In addition, the existing central battery-operated emergency lighting from Inotec in the hall was to be integrated into the strip lighting. It's all very simple with the E-Line Pro: with the help of the selected illuminance and beam characteristics, luminaire inserts and dummy units alternate in the continuous row. This meant that the Inotec emergency lighting could simply be integrated into the continuous-row lighting system using a suitable function module instead of a dummy piece. A separate cable in the E-Line Pro device carrier ensures the power supply in an emergency. The presence detectors for controlling the lighting were also seamlessly installed between the luminaire inserts using a function module. Daylight sensors were not installed due to the lack of windows.

Exemplary

Old hall, latest technology

The refurbished central warehouse in Garching shows how an existing property can be seamlessly integrated into a state-of-the-art logistics infrastructure following a lighting refurbishment, with all the benefits in terms of lighting quality, energy efficiency andcarbon footprint. The decisive factor for an efficient reorganisation process is not only the right portfolio, but also close cooperation in a spirit of partnership. This is because most refurbishment projects involve rescheduling and adjustments. "Thanks to our high level of vertical integration with customised luminaire production in the company, we can react quickly to project-specific challenges," explains Maik Nitt, Key Account Manager at TRILUX. The result is convincing. "We are talking about energy savings of around 80 per cent in Garching, which makes a huge difference both economically and ecologically," summarises Stefan Schmidmair from Raben.
