VfL Wolfsburg

The lighting is also first-rate

VfL Wolfsburg stands not only for top-class football with passion, technique and team spirit – the club also demonstrates exemplary community engagement. By joining the United Nations' 'Race to Zero' as early as 2020, the top‑flight club set itself ambitious climate targets: by 2030, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 55 per cent compared with the 2017/18 season. A key element of this is energy‑efficient and smart lighting. For over 14 years, TRILUX has been the Wolves' official lighting and climate partner and has already fitted and retrofitted numerous areas, from the players' tunnel to the stadium roof lighting, with high-quality, energy-efficient LED solutions. And in each of these areas, tailored lighting plays to its particular strengths. An overview of current projects, from the fan shop to the champagne lounge, shows how lighting becomes part of the overall experience in elite sport.

Full power

High-quality and efficient lighting in the strength room

With the newly built "Kraftwerk" between the VfL Center in Wolfsburg and the Volkswagen Arena, the club has created a special indoor training facility for its elite athletes. On 750 m2, the professional footballers can train either using equipment or on an artificial turf pitch. The central training areas are illuminated by impact-resistant (IK08) and ball-impact-resistant (DIN 18032-3) Actison Fit hall lights (picture). Thanks to their efficiency (140 lm/W) and the high-quality, uniform, glare-free light, they are the ideal choice for sports halls – and contribute to the club’s sustainability goals. The upper floor is dominated by a single large room, which is structured and subdivided by wooden partitions and glass office cubes. To improve the acoustics, rectangular baffles were installed beneath the ceiling throughout the room. The ceiling is enlivened by round Onplana pendant lights between the baffles, which provide the general lighting.

VIP-Allee

Tailor-made refurbishment operation

For special guests, VfL Wolfsburg even rolls out the red carpet when it comes to lighting. The VIP avenue is a representative access and entrance area for the club's sponsors, partners and guests of honour. For traditional reasons, VfL retained the existing mast lights with the reflective surface mounted externally on the mast — but wanted to convert them to modern LED technology for energy‑efficiency and quality reasons. Therefore, TRILUX's special luminaire production developed a custom-fit LED retrofit insert based on the Faciella Slim spotlights. The narrow-beam optics direct the light precisely onto the reflective surface, thereby minimising the amount of stray light. The lights were networked and, like most other indoor and outdoor lighting in the VfL world, integrated into the existing KNX control system.

Champagne Lounge

Celebrate Football in Style

For VIPs, attending a match is not only about the excitement on the pitch, but also about enjoying relaxed comfort in an exclusive atmosphere. The Champagne Lounge does exactly that. It is one of the premium hospitality zones in the Volkswagen Arena. The ambience is dominated by stylish interior furnishings, with armchairs and sofas in warm berry tones. Matching this, the lighting is tastefully restrained: Onplana surface-mounted fittings with a decorative black frame sit flush to the ceiling and provide high-quality, even-area illumination. For attractive light accents and a sense of dynamism in the room, they were combined with Onplana surface-mounted luminaires and suspended Finea light-channel elements.

Eventcenter

The perfect venue for events

The Volkswagen Arena is also well equipped for considerably larger events. The event centre is on the raised ground floor and offers an unobstructed view of the professionals' external training ground. With a size of 1,200 m2, a capacity for around 400 people, and attractive facilities, the premises are ideally suited to meetings, congresses and workshops. The space is equipped with high-quality, state-of-the-art event technology and can be divided into four smaller areas on request. Until now, the rooms have been lit by conventional downlights. By refurbishing with Arimo Fit recessed luminaires equipped with Tunable White LEDs, energy consumption is significantly reduced. In addition, the colour temperature can be flexibly adjusted to suit the individual event. On request, RGBW-LEDs can add extra colour.

Fanshop

An immersive world in green and white

As the direct point of contact between fans and the club, the fan shop at the Volkswagen Arena plays a special role. Because this is about much more than just a sales pitch. It was conceived as an experiential environment that inspires the fans and reinforces VfL Wolfsburg's brand identity. And not only through the club colours green and white as the predominant colour theme – but also through emotionally evocative elements such as the life-size statue of captain Josué celebrating with the championship trophy that the club won in the 2008/09 season. The shop itself has a clearly structured, open interior layout with gridwalls and stands for displaying merchandise. The suspended ceiling was also realised as a ceiling grid and is used to accommodate the shop lighting. General lighting is provided by suspended Much Moon pendant lights in elegant black. Also available are B.VEO Track rail spotlights for accent lighting, naturally in black as well. They can be rotated through 355° and tilted through 90°, allowing precise product presentation. Luceo Slim pendant lights mark the checkout area. They provide glare-free, uniform light and, through their indirect component, ensure a pleasant ceiling illumination.

Big projects, big impact

Further lighting projects that contribute to the sustainability ambitions and improve the energy targets (from the club's energy management system under ISO 50001): the retrofitting of the youth development centre to LED technology. To reduce energy consumption, the existing lights in the indoor areas covering approximately 2,200 m2 were upgraded to energy-efficient LED solutions. Among others, Arimo Fit, Oleveon Fit, Opendo, Olisq and Tugra are used. Even at the AOK Stadium, where, among others, VfL Wolfsburg's women's team plays, there was scope for optimisation. Over 230 internal luminaires were retrofitted with LED technology (Arimo Fit, Inperla, Inplana). For VfL Wolfsburg, the consistent use of LED solutions, including lighting management, pays off: overall, the replacement of light fittings over the past three seasons has reduced energy demand by around 60 kW across all facilities. With the lighting solutions used, TRILUX makes an important contribution towards sustainability at VfL. "We reduce energy consumption, improve light quality and create new experiential spaces through smart lighting that contribute to the club's brand identity," says Sascha Färber, Head of Infrastructure, Organisation and Security at VfL Wolfsburg. Therefore, such projects will continue to be systematically planned as part of the partnership between VfL Wolfsburg and TRILUX.
