Terms and definitions

Anti-panic area according to EN 50172: Areas with unmarked escape routes in halls larger than 60 m2 or smaller areas if they are exposed to additional hazards, e.g. in case of utilisation by larger gatherings.

Emergency light in continuous operation according to EN 50172: Luminaire in which lamps for emergency lighting are fed continuously whenever general lighting or emergency lighting is required. Emergency light in stand-by operation according to EN 50172: Luminaire in which lamps for emergency lighting are only switched on in case of general lighting power supply failure.

Backlit safety signs according to EN 50172: Sign illuminated by an internal light source when required.

Illuminated safety signs according to EN 50172: Sign illuminated by an external light source when required. Required battery operation time according to EN 50172: Duration of the emergency battery operation required for the functionality in question.

Rated operating time according to EN 50172: Duration specified by the manufacturer during which the rated luminous flux is emitted.

Changeover period according to DIN VDE 0100-718: Time period between the registration of general power supply failure and the moment of activation of the power source for safety purposes. EN 1838 makes a distinction between the power-on delay until 50% or 100% of maintained illuminance are achieved.
